This year, the proceeds from Bucky’s Birthday Bash went to the New Mexico Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance to help them fight the road closures planned by the U.S. Forest Service in the Gila National Forest. The new Travel Management Plan proposed by the USFS will close over 50% of the roads in the Gila and limit camping to a few designated camping areas. Gone will be the days of setting up a camp in a secluded area that allows for solitude and a great forest experience.
This year’s Bash was held during the Whitewater/Baldy Fire in the southwestern area of the Gila National Forest. Nearly 300,000 acres burned in this devastating fire which could have been extinguished within the first three days if only the USFS had done so. Instead they chose to monitor the fire and when it did take off, it was way too much to handle. The federal government seems to be very good at doing more harm than good.
We had over 300 people at the Bash this year. Bucky’s brisket dinner was excellent and everyone had a great time.
